Sports PT Residency Program

The Michigan Medicine-MedSport Sports Physical Therapy Residency program provides licensed physical therapists with a unique year of dedicated post graduate training in the specialty area of sports rehabilitation.  Our program has been granted and is currently in the accreditation process.Ìý

ABPTRFE has granted Michigan Medicine-MedSport Sports Physical Therapy Residency program candidacy status. Candidacy status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation. Achieving candidacy status is not an indication that ABPTRFE will grant initial accreditation. Participants who graduate from a program in candidacy status are not deemed to have completed an accredited program.

Provide a quality advanced education to sports physical therapists, guiding them to achieve clinical sports specialization.  We develop leaders, educators, and evidence-based practitioners in sports physical therapy while enhancing patient care to the patients/clients served. The program is dedicated to guiding growth, continuous improvement, and strategic initiatives. ÌýÌý

  • Case-based learning of sports diagnoses throughout the lifespanÌýÌý
  • Evidence-based and patient-centered clinical reasoning
  • Return to play decision making
  • Sport specific biomechanics
  • A wide breadth of rehabilitation experiences on the field, in the training room and in our clinics

  • Weekly 1-on-1 Clinical MentoringÌý
  • In person education, both lecture and lab based, focusing on all areas described in ABPTRFE’s Ìý
  • Monthly Staff Journal Club, In-service and lab-based educational opportunitiesÌý
  • Access to MedSport hosted continuing education coursesÌý
  • Elective learning opportunities in sub-specialty practice areasÌý
  • Onsite Athletic and Event coverage opportunitiesÌý

Requirements for ApplicantsÌý

Our Sports Residency Program currently utilizes RF-PTCAS to allow interested applicants to apply to our program and are participating in a uniform and standardized Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program Match for the upcoming application cycle.

Admission in to the MedSport Sports Physical Therapy Residency program is highly competitive with limited spots available each year. Candidates are encouraged to have demonstrated a solid foundation in sport and orthopaedic rehabilitation background as part of their employment, graduate training, or prior experience. In addition to graduating from an accredited physical therapy program, candidates must be:ÌýÌý

  • A licensed Physical Therapist or be eligible for licensure as a physical therapist in the state of Michigan prior to starting the residency program.ÌýÌý
  • New graduates should take the NBPT Exam no later than April in order to be eligible to start the program in JulyÌý
  • Possess one of the following prior to starting the program: A current ATC designation, a current license as an EMT or certification as an Emergency ResponderÌý
  • Duration: 1 yearÌýÌý
  • Application Period: October-December (for upcoming year)Ìý
  • Salary: Commensurate with experienceÌý
